I met Dave early on in my time at St John’s. He was very laid back, had a great sense of humour and was incredibly generous and thoughtful. I have good memories of spending time with Dave and friends in the Royal Oak and the Crush Bar. I also remember him making compilation tapes for friends with his favourite musicians even if we had never heard of them. And he had the knack of picking the tracks to put on the tape that he thought you would most like, to get you hooked onto his musical taste! I still have a tape he gave me with the Christmas tag inside with his tiny writing which so epitomised his unassuming but thoughtful personality. Dave had the ability to get on with everyone and, as a result, brought people from different backgrounds together with ease. He also had the ability to get excellent grades in his essays even though he wrote them at the last minute. If people were clubbing together to buy someone a birthday present and someone in the group bailed out, Dave’s generosity was such that he would always just quietly make up the difference, even if he did quietly let it slip at a later stage!! He never judged; he was a great guy and will be sadly missed.
